The Tian'anmen (Gate of Heavenly Peace) is widely used as a national symbol, as Mao Tsedong portrait is hung. First built during the Ming Dynasty in 1420, it was the entrance of the Imperial City, within which the Forbidden City was located.
The Forbidden City was the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming Dynasty to the end of the Quing Dynasty. For almost 500 years, it served as the home of Emperors and their households, as well as the ceremonial and political center of Chinese government. The Last Emperor (1987), was the first film ever authorised by the government of the People's Republic of China to be filmed in the Forbidden City.
